Direct Connection

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. – James 5:13

Being a father of four and a husband of one, I appreciate the recent advances made in cell phone technology. No matter where I am or what I am doing I have a direct connection to my kids and my wife Julie. This direct connection is very helpful in coordinating our busy schedules. However, no matter how advanced phone technology is today it does not give us a direct connection to everyone. Wouldn’t you like to have a direct connection to the White House to give the president your “two-cents” on the war and economy? How about a direct connection to the coach of your favorite professional sports team to give your opinion on what plays they should be calling? How about a direct connection to those who have gone before us, such as loved ones or historical figures? Unfortunately, no matter how many advancements are made in communication technology we will probably never make these connections.

Wouldn’t it be great to have a direct connection to the creator of the universe, our creator, the one who knows us better than we know ourselves? We do have that direct connection through prayer and praise. And that connection is never busy or out-of-order. We can call on God anytime, anywhere and give him our “two-cents”, let Him know what a great job he is doing, thank Him for abundant blessings, or whenever we just need a listening ear. It is comforting to know that God is only a prayer away.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the gift of prayer. I thank you that I can call on you anytime I need you and you are always there ready to talk. Help me never to forget about this direct connection to you. Amen.

Faith Tip: Today are you “weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?” If so, take it to the Lord in prayer.

Tending the Garden of Faith

Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. – Mark 4:18-19

Growing a garden is hard work. At first it sounds easy; plant a seed, water it and watch it produce fruit. However, the reality is that to grow a fruitful garden requires constant tending; making sure the plants aren’t overtaken by bugs, weeds, thorns, molds and other harmful things that can easily destroy a plant.

Living a life of faith is kind of like growing a garden. On the surface it sounds easy; attend church, read the Bible, and pray. However, the reality is that to live a fruitful life of faith requires a lot of hard work. We must not allow the worries and greediness of this life to overtake and choke out the growth of faith in our life. God has planted that mustard seed of faith within us and we must be the ones to make sure it grows into a fruitful life, by tending to our faith on a daily basis and removing those “weeds” of destruction from our life.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the faith within me. Open my eyes so that I may see the destructive weeds in my life that are choking out the word and making my life unfruitful.

Help me be diligent in tending to my faith so that it produces fruit in my life. Amen.

Faith Tip: Are you allowing worry or greed to become a focus in you life instead of God? What are the “weeds” in your life that need to be pulled?

Planting Seeds of Faith

Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.” – Luke 13:18-19

I am always amazed when I look at the seed of an apple and think how an entire apple tree can grow from such a small seed. Just planting one apple seed can produce many more apples in the future. John Chapman, commonly known as Johnny Appleseed, understood this as he went around the country planting apple seeds that grew into apple trees that are still producing apples today.

As Christians we are called to spread seeds; not apple seeds, but seeds of faith. Just one little small mustard-seed of faith can grow into a very strong faith in the future. We are not called to plant the entire tree, but just spread small seeds of faith wherever we go. We may never see the fruit that these little seeds of faith produce, but just imagine what the future would look like if every Christian made it their responsibility to plant at least one mustard-seed of faith each day!

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the mustard-seed of faith that was planted in me and that has grown to a strong faith in you. Help me to share the fruits of the Spirit by planting little seeds of faith in others for the glory of your Kingdom. Amen.

Faith Tip: Decide how you might be able to plant mustard-seeds of faith in the people that you come in contact with today.

A Link in the Chain

“Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph, the son of Heli,” - Luke 3:23

And so it begins the genealogy of Jesus, tracing his roots throughout the generations all the way back to Adam. The long list of genealogies are usually those parts of the Bible where we as readers usually become speed readers or skip the entire section all together. A long list of names that are difficult to pronounce doesn’t make the most exciting reading material. In this specific list of Jesus’ genealogies we find names that are familiar, such as Noah, Abraham, and David, but we also discover names like Terah, Jorim and Cosam that are not familiar. Although we might not find these long lists of names very important, they are significant to the biblical story and that is why they are included in these ancient texts.

The genealogies point to the fact that there have been many who have gone before us. We are not our own person that has been formed only by the experiences of our own life. We are a link in a long chain of people who lived many years before us, some we know and many we don’t know, but their lives and experiences have impacted and shaped our lives in some way. This also means that there will be many who will come after us and their lives will be shaped and impacted by how we have lived our lives. The choices you make today do not just shape your part of the link, they move the entire chain. How are you living your life for those will follow?

Prayer: Thank you Lord for those who have come before me who have impacted my life today. Help me to live me life and make good choices not only for my benefit, but also for those who will follow. Amen.

Faith Tip: Think about those in the future who will never know you on this earth, but will walk in the footsteps that you lay down today. What footsteps are you laying down today that will have a positive impact in the future? What footsteps are you laying down today that will have a negative impact on the future? Do you need to make a change in where your footsteps lead?

Faith and Eternity

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. – Hebrews 11:13

Last night, in our Wednesday night class, we talked about how the faithful saints of the Bible lived their lives. We discovered from our study that people like Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Moses lived with two very distinct perspectives that guided their lives. These two perspectives were faith and eternal life. They held on to their faith in God to the day they died, even when they may have not yet received the things God had promised. They also lived with a perspective that this is not their home and that life here on earth should be impacted by what is to come in our heavenly home.

These saints of the Bible have given us an example of how we are to live our lives in following Jesus. By faith Noah built a large boat despite the fact that there had never been a flood before. By faith Abraham trusted in the Lord to provide a sacrifice in place of his son. By faith Moses gave up a comfortable, wealthy life in Pharaoh’s palace to lead the Israelites through the wilderness for forty years. All of these seem silly from a worldly perspective, but from a perspective of eternity they seem normal. What are you doing in your life today that requires faith in God?

Prayer: Thank you God for the faith that you have placed in me. Help me to live my life more by faith and less by sight. Thank you for those who have gone before me to create a path of faithfulness for me to follow. Amen.

Worry Less, Trust More

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? – Luke 12:25-26

The beginning of a new year can be exciting for some as they look forward to the possibilities and opportunities that await. For some, however a new year can cause worry and anxiety. Some might worry this year will be as bad as the last or that it might even be worse. They worry that in this year they might go deeper in debt, struggle with health issues, wrestle with relationships, or just coast through another year without accomplishing what they want in life.

Jesus says that it is not our place or responsibility to worry about the future, because we do not control the future. We cannot predict what will happen in this day, let alone what will happen in the year to come. Only God knows what tomorrow will bring. So instead of beginning this year with worry, begin by trusting that God has given you a new year filled with blessings and plans that our good.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you hold my future in your hands. Forgive me when I try to pull that future out of your hands and into mine with my worry. Help me to realize that worrying does not help my future, but only destroys the happiness of the present that you have giving me. Amen.

Faith Tip: What are you worried about? Make a New Year’s resolution to worry less and trust more knowing that God is in control of your future.

A New Beginning

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here – 2 Corinthians 5:17

Happy New Year! Whenever we start a new year it feels as if we have walked through a door, entering into a new place and leaving behind an old familiar one. New beginnings are exciting for they give us a chance to start afresh, to regain hope, and look forward to what is to come. They also provide an opportunity to leave behind hurts, trouble and missed opportunities, those things we would soon like to forget.

God is a god of new beginnings. In Jesus Christ we are given the opportunity to become a new person and leave behind the person we no longer want to be. We have the opportunity to make changes for the better, to love more, judge less, to be more forgiving and less critical, to enjoy life and not let worry sap away our happiness, to use our words to build up instead of tear down and to think more of others than ourselves. In Christ we have been given a second chance, a fresh hope, a new beginning!

What are you going to do with this new beginning in 2012?

Prayer: Thank you Lord for giving me a new beginning. Open my eye to see what I need to change in my life to live as a new creation in Christ. Help me to become more like Jesus. Amen.

Happy Birthday Jesus!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. – Isaiah 9:6

It is always a miracle when a child is born. There is great celebration around the birth of a baby. And that celebration continues throughout the life of the child with the celebration of birthdays. I mention this, because today is my birthday. I am looking forward to celebrating with my family that day soooooo many years ago when I was born.

There is also another birthday that we will be celebrating in a few days. It is a birth that was a greater miracle and much more important than mine. It is the birthday of the child that is spoken of in Isaiah. It is the birthday of our King! As Christians we will celebrate that day when we were given God’s Son as our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. I am looking forward to that celebration too!!!

Prayer: Thank you God for sending us your Son to be our King. Thank you for Christmas to help us remember and celebrate that wonderful gift! Amen.

Do Not Be Afraid

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.” – Luke 2:10

In the Christmas story there are four recorded angelic appearances. The first angelic visit is to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist. The following visits are to Mary, Joseph and the shepherds to announce the birth of Jesus. It is interesting to note that in all four announcements the angel says, “Do not be afraid.”

Fear is an ever constant emotion in this world of sin. We live in fear of losing a job, being alone, losing a loved one, disappointment, rejection, embarrassment, shame, separation, illness, sorrow, dying, an the list goes on and on. That is why God sent us his son Jesus Christ, so that we would no longer need to live in fear. The good news that the angels announced is that we do not need to be afraid. Jesus Christ was given to us as our Lord and Savior to conquer our fears so that we can live in great joy. And as the angel said this is not just for a few, but this is good news for all people. So this Christmas, throw away your fears and accept the good news of great joy in Jesus Christ!

Prayer: Thank you Lord for coming to conquer my fears. Help me not to be afraid but to fully trust in you and find joy and contentment in the good news of Jesus. Amen.

Faith Tip: What fears are you holding onto today? Remember the angels command, “Do not be afraid” and find ways to live instead in the joy of Jesus Christ.

The Love of Christmas

This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. – 1 John 4:9

The foundation of Christmas is love. We gather with family and friends because of love. We fight the crowds at the mall to buy a Christmas present because of love. We spent hours baking, cooking, cleaning and preparing because of love. We give to those in need because of love. We gather for candlelight services to worship and praise the Lord because of love. Without love there would be no Christmas.

It is because of God’s great love for us that we celebrate Christmas. God showed us his love by sending his one and only Son into the world as a little infant born in a cattle stall. What a wonderful gift! This Christmas season let us share God’s wonderful love with others.

Prayer: Thank you Father for your love for me and showing your love by sending me the most wonderful gift in Jesus Christ. Help me to remember your love for me and share that love with those around me. Amen.

Faith Tip: Don’t let the busyness of the Christmas season overwhelm you, instead find ways to share God’s love with others today.

The Light of Jesus

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. – Isaiah 9:2

Yesterday, around mid-afternoon, a large bank of dark clouds covered the sky. I mentioned to my daughter how dark it was for the middle of the day. However, the darkness did not last. Before long the clouds had gone away and bright sunlight had broken through the darkness. Here in western Michigan any amount of sun is a welcomed sight in the midst of what is usually a dark and dreary winter. Imagine what it would be like to live in a land of darkness without any light.

Because of our sins we do live in the midst of darkness. Our life is covered with a dreary, cold darkness. However, we no longer have to live in the midst of the darkness of sin, because God has given us a “great light” in Jesus Christ. That is the good news that we celebrate on Christmas; the wonderful gift of the light of Jesus.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the light of Jesus that shines in my life. May His light always shine in my heart and break through the darkness of sin. Amen.

Faith Tip: Are you struggling with the darkness of sin in your life? If so let the light of Jesus shine in your heart and celebrate that Jesus light dawned for all on Christmas.

God's Extravagant Work in You

I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength! – Ephesians 1:17-19 The Message

In interviewing a client yesterday, it was such a joy to listen and watch them express the work God has done in them. They feel so confident that they are going in the right direction of God’s calling even though they don’t know exactly how it will all turn out. To know the challenges they have experienced over the last couple of years and to see them now smiling, laughing and just feeling positive about their future is such a blessing. They are trust God with their all.

God has a perfect plan for all of us. Some of that plan will be played out today. As we come closer to God seeking him, he is faithful in revealing our next step in the plan. As we obediently follow him, we will experience his lavish work in our lives and know it is from him. This will give us more reason to praise and worship him and the endless energy to do it.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I praise you for the wonderful works you do in my life and the lives around me. Thank you for your Holy Spirit that enables me to see with open eyes your work more clearly and give you the praise you so deserve. Amen

Faith Tip: Seek God today in prayer and in his Word. There’s a message for you today. Pray for enlightenment and be ready to receive.

Joy to the World

What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life—and the life was manifested, and we have seen and testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was manifested to us—what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete. – John 1:1-4

I saw on the news this morning a report on medical breakthroughs that will possibly extend our life on earth by reversing the aging effects on our bodies. While I think this is interesting, I wonder if people who fight to live so long have missed the message of eternal life. I can’t help to think once a person is in the presence of Jesus that they wonder why they fought so hard to keep from this moment. The Scriptures tell us that everything is perfect in heaven and we get to live there for eternity. No more tears, no more hurts, no more political phone calls … sorry, to those who enjoy receiving them.

Our joy comes from knowing the fact that we are God’s and we will be with him forever. There is a place being prepared especially for us. That’s how special we are to Jesus. The fellowship there will be grand.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for the provision of eternal life you made for me. I have joy knowing that I will be with you forever, and nothing can take that away from me. I pray that I share this joy with others so that we can fellowship together for eternity. Amen

Faith Tip: Focus today on the gift of eternal life and wonder about what that will be like. The gift started with a little baby in the stable.

This Little Light of Mine

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:14-16

I saw a flicker by the Christmas tree and looked up. The top portion of lights was burning brighter than the bottom. I wasn’t sure why that was happening until a few moments later when that whole section of lights went dark. It is disappointing to have half of a Christmas tree lit up. The dark area doesn’t allow the beauty of the tree to be seen.

Our Christian walk is like that. The light of Christ that we embody needs to be shone brightly in a dark world. The beauty of Jesus cannot be seen and experienced if we choose not to shine. Like those lights on the tree that went out, we are to shine God’s light the brightest we can until our time on earth is done. The light will carry us to our new home in heaven never leaving its home in us.

Prayer: Jesus, your light that shines is the most beautiful. I pray that I confidently shine it to all I see today. Amen

Faith Tip: Don’t hide the beauty of God’s light. Brighten up dark places today with it.

Magnifying the Christmas Story

And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” Luke 1:46-47

This morning the snow is falling and covering the land in a blanket of white. It is beautiful to wake up in the morning and look out the window at a landscape covered in fresh fallen snow (That is if you don’t have to go out in it). But in order to appreciate the real beauty of snow you would need a magnifying glass to see the intricate unique details of each small snow flake.

Mary’s song is often called the Magnificat because this is the first word of the song in the Latin translation. Mary sang her song in order to magnify the Lord. She did this by magnifying the details of what God had done for her and for others. Her song reminds us of the greatness of the Lord by revealing to us the small details.

Often times when we think about the Christmas story we remember the “big picture”, but we often miss the details. Like snow, the beauty of the Christmas story is found in the unique small details; small details like a little baby born in a stable and laid in a manger. When God came to earth he didn’t come in grandeur, but he came in small wonders. This Christmas let us reveal God to others by magnifying the small details about what God has done for us.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you can be found even in the smallest details. Forgive me when I overlook these details and forget to magnify you. In this Advent season help me to notice the small details and magnify them in order to reveal you to others. Amen.

Faith Tip: As you watch the snow think about how it comes down to earth as small little snow flakes and then remember that God came to earth as a small little baby.

Prepare The Way For The Lord

As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation.’” – Luke 3:4-6

The Advent season is a time of preparation. We busy ourselves preparing for the celebration of Christmas. We decorate our homes, prepare for family visits, shop for gifts, plan for Christmas parties, practice for Christmas programs, etc… Preparation is hard work.

The preparations in Advent are there to remind us that as Christians it is our responsibility to prepare the way for the Lord. When Jesus came to earth as a little baby in a manger it was John the Baptist job to prepare the way for the Lord so that all might see God’s salvation. Now we must be busy preparing the way for Christ’s second coming in order that all might see the salvation of God. Preparation is hard work, but the results are worth it.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the promise of you return. We look forward to that day. Until that day comes give me strength, courage, faith and passion to daily be preparing for that day. Amen.

Faith Tip: What can you do today to prepare the way for the Lord? Sharing God’s love in word or action is one way to enter into someone’s life to help them make their rough ways smooth, so that they will come to know God’s wonderful gift of salvation.

A Time to Wonder

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. - Luke 2:19

In the Christmas story I find this verse to be one of the most interesting. Here was a young woman, who, although she was a virgin, had just given birth, and given birth in a stable filled with smelly animals no less. To top it off, along came some shepherds to see the baby, telling stories about an angel and heavenly hosts filling the night sky with a message about this baby being the promised Savior. In the midst of this unbelievable and amazing scene, Mary somehow finds a moment to treasure and ponder all that has happened.

The Advent season can become quite hectic with all the shopping, decorating, baking, party going, Christmas concerts, family get togethers, etc…. In the midst of this busy season we often don’t take time to treasure and ponder like Mary did, but we should. Advent is a time to remember what God has done for us through the wonderful gift of Jesus Christ. This Advent season, in the midst of all the busyness, take a moment to treasure and ponder the wonderful gift of Jesus Christ.

Prayer: Thank you God for giving us your Son to save us from our sins. In the midst of celebrating His birth, help me to take a moment to remember the reason for this celebration. Amen.

Faith Tip: Set aside some time to treasure and ponder. Maybe use that time to read the Christmas Story, listen to some Christmas carols, meditate on a verse from the Christmas story, etc….

All I Want for Christmas

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. – Romans 5:5

This is the time of the year when children are making their Christmas lists and checking them twice, making sure that they haven’t forgotten something that they hope to get for Christmas. Christmas is a time of great expectation as children anticipate Christmas day when they hope their Christmas lists become more than just words on a page.

The Advent season is a time of expectation. As Christians we await with great anticipation the second coming of Christ. But the hope we have in Christ is very different then the worldly hope with which children create their Christmas wishes. The hope we have in Christ is sure, certain and guaranteed. This is a hope that will never disappoint us. When Christmas comes children may not receive everything they have put on their wish list and their worldly hopes will soon fade away. But with our hope in Christ we can be assured that there will certainly be a day when Christ returns again. Alleluia!

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the hope that we have in Christ. Thank you that this hope will never disappoint us. In this Advent season, help me to hope with great expectation for Christ to come again. Amen.

Faith Tip: A child is filled with joy and excitement as they look forward to Christmas. Does joy and excitement fill your life and soul as you look forward to the coming of Christ? If not think of ways to give yourself an expectant outlook in each and every day? How might looking forward to Christ’s return change the way you live your life?

God is All

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” – Revelation 1:8

Who is God? This question I ask myself many times as I seek to know more. To me, it seems that God’s characteristics are endless. There always seems to be something new to learn about God. For example, how did God come to be? He always was.

This biblical truth is beyond our understanding for we experience a beginning in all things as we also experience an end. Life is all about beginnings and endings, but God is more than that. He is an ongoing, unchanging, full of life foundation that we can steadily stand on for all things. We will never be separated from God once we have committed to a relationship through Jesus Christ. With so many things in this world that are uncertain, God gives us peace knowing that he will never leave us or forsake us.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord that you are always with me. I pray the confidence you give me in that promise will allow me to always come to you first with all that life offers. Amen

Faith Tip: Pray to know God more and open your heart and mind to what he will show you.

What Will Be Left?

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives… - 2 Peter 3:10-11

The season of overabundant marketing has come. Television, email, newspaper, magazines, mailers and more all stating “Buy Our Stuff!” I realize this employs many copywriters and other marketing staff, so the more savvy they are the more successful in the business. As a consumer, I sometimes feel like a target especially at Christmas time with messages that I need a product to have a merry Christmas.

God says all the stuff is going up in smoke. After all the chaff is burned off, what will be left? We will. Who we become in Christ Jesus and what we have done will be the measure of success. The playing field will be leveled where there will be no poor or rich, no popular or unpopular people, just us and God. The relationship is more important than the stuff.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for the relationship we have together. I know you initiated it and I had the opportunity to respond. I pray I take advantage of the ways we can build on it. Amen

Faith Tip: Attempt to fast from all the media frenzy of the season and focus on the relationship opportunities you have with God.

Glory in God's Workmanship

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. – Ephesians 2:10

I have a couple of brother-in-laws who are very gifted in woodworking. They have made beautiful furniture, household accessories, and more. They love working with the wood and have the patience to make each piece special. Each item they create has a purpose and as they work on the project, they keep the end purpose in mind to its completion.

The Great Artist God did the same thing as he made us. Each of us is specially made by his patient hands with the goal of belonging to Jesus Christ and using our gifts and talents for his purposes. It was planned out before we were born and is being lived out in our lives to its completion.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for the workmanship you have done in my life giving me purpose in Jesus Christ. I pray that I allow you to work in and through me today as we journey together. Amen

Faith Tip: When you come across something today that took a lot of work and patience, consider how you are specially made by God for a great purpose.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; - Romans 3:23-24

Tearing the piece of bread from the loaf, I heard the familiar words, “This is Christ’s body, broken for you.” And as I dunked the piece into the cup, the reminder given to me was, “The blood of Christ spilled for you.”

The act of communion is so important to Jesus, because he does not want us to forget. We are not to forget the great sacrifice made, but also that the price was paid for our freedom in Christ. We tend to remember the sacrifice, but sometimes forget that we are free to live holy lives, and we still act like we are under Satan’s reign.

This Advent season, reopen the gift of your freedom in Christ and enjoy the riches that are meant for you. This is the best deal of the season for you and someone you love.

Prayer: Jesus, I thank you for the wonderful gift of freedom you have given me though the price was great to you. Your love for me is the perfect fit for each day of my life, and I pray that I can focus on you rather than what the world has to offer. Amen

Faith Tip: Each day during Advent, starting with today, find a new freedom you have in Christ and enjoy it to the glory of God.

Thanksgiving in Word and Action

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. – Colossians 3:17

In this passage Paul is urging the Colossians to give thanks to God in all they do and say. That is a difficult concept to grasp. It is easy for us to understand giving thanks before a meal, during our times of prayer, when we are abundantly blessed and when we are happy and content in life, but it is much more difficult for us to understand how to give thanks in all that we do and say. What does it look like to give thanks when we are shopping for groceries, driving a car, or changing a baby’s diaper? What does it look like to give thanks when we are talking to a phone salesperson, talking in a business meeting, or asking someone for directions?

To understand what Paul is talking about, we have to look at the middle part of the verse where it says, “do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” When we are living our life for the Lord then everything we do and say is an act of thanksgiving in God’s eyes. When we are living our lives for ourselves than our actions and words are not giving thanks to God. Give all your life to the Lord and let every action you do and every word you speak be a gift of thanksgiving to God.

Prayer: Thank you God for sending Jesus Christ to be an example of how you want me to live my life. Forgive me when I live my life in selfish ways. May all I do and say be done in the name of Jesus as a thanksgiving to you. Amen.

Faith Tip: Today, as we celebrate Thanksgiving, think about how your actions and words are a thanksgiving to God.

Thanksgiving in Song

Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. – Ephesians 5:19-20

Do you ever get a song stuck in your head that kind of goes with you throughout the day? I enjoy it when the song that goes with me is a song of praise, because it helps me focus on the Lord all day long. Maybe that is what Paul is referring to when he speaks about “songs from the Spirit.”

When we think of giving thanks we often picture our thanksgivings in the forms of prayers. However Paul tells us that we can also give thanks to the Lord when we sing and make music from our hearts. The ability to sing is a gift from the Lord and our songs, no matter how well we sing, is our gift of thanksgiving to God. So this Thanksgiving give thanks to the Lord with a song.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for giving me the ability to praise and thank you in song. Let my heart sing for all the blessings that you have given to me. May my song be a joyful noise to you ears. Amen.

Faith Tip: Plan to come and worship on Thanksgiving morning at 9:00am where we will have the opportunity to sing many Thanksgiving songs.

Enter With Thanksgiving

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. – Psalm 100:4

Psalm 100 was originally used in worship of the Lord as the worshippers entered the temple courts through the gates. It helped focus the worshippers’ hearts on thanksgiving and praise as they entered into a time of worship. Thanksgiving is a wonderful way to enter into worship!

Psalm 100 provides us with wisdom of how we should enter not only worship, but all aspects of our life. Think of how much better things would go if we entered into everything with an attitude of gratitude. All you need to do is apply the first part of verse 4 to your situations in life. For example, enter your day with thanksgiving… Enter your week with thanksgiving…Enter your meal with thanksgiving…Enter your work with thanksgiving…Enter your family with thanksgiving…Enter your leisure time with thanksgiving…Enter your bedtime with thanksgiving. When we enter into everything with thanksgiving it will invariably lead us to praise of worship of the Lord.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the life that you have given to me. May I live my life in thanksgiving to you. Help me to enter into everything I do with a heart of thanksgiving. Amen.

Faith Tip: Today as you begin a new task or go from one place to another, remember Psalm 100:4 and enter with a heart of thanksgiving.

Overflowing Abundance

You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. – Psalm 65:11

Last night our churched gathered together for our annual Harvest Celebration. The main portion of the celebration included the bringing of our abundance offerings. This offering represents the abundant blessings that God has given to us throughout the year. I am not one who sheds tears easily, but as young and old alike walked to the cross to give of their offerings it almost brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful sight! God is so good and certainly blesses us abundantly!

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week we will definitely celebrate with abundance. Many will enjoy an abundance of turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie. Houses will be filled with an abundance of family. Football fans will watch an abundance of football. Airports will be overflowing with an abundance of travelers. In this country we live in abundance compared to many others around the world.

As Americans we certainly have a lot to be thankful for. As we look back over the year we can certainly see how the Lord has crowned the year with his bounty and how his carts overflow with abundance. This Thanksgiving give thanks for the abundant blessings that the Lord has given!

Prayer: I give you thanks, O Lord, for your abundant blessings. Let me never forget what you have done for me. I will give thanks to you and praise your name forever. Amen.

Faith Tip: As you celebrate Thanksgiving, be aware of the abundant blessings the Lord has given you and thank God for his abundant love, grace and mercy.

God Says Yes

Whatever God has promised gets stamped with the Yes of Jesus. In him, this is what we preach and pray, the great Amen, God's Yes and our Yes together, gloriously evident. God affirms us, making us a sure thing in Christ, putting his Yes within us. By his Spirit he has stamped us with his eternal pledge—a sure beginning of what he is destined to complete. – 2 Corinthians 1:20-22 The Message

I remember making some homemade bread from a book I purchased that had beautiful pictures of all different kinds of loaves. There were step by step instructions including the mixing, kneading, raising and baking. The implied promise was for a beautiful loaf of bread just like in the picture. Didn’t happen. I believe I did all the steps correctly, but what came out of the oven was more like a manhole cover than loaf. It did smell good though, so I’m grateful for the aromatherapy.

Life can be like that, can’t it? You think you are doing the right thing, making the right choices, and the expected implied promise of the world is that life will be free from trouble. All of us know that isn’t really true. Jesus said we would have trouble. He being the Son of God and was perfect had trouble, why wouldn’t we?

We do have a guarantee with God. It is “a sure thing” when we are in Christ that we will have eternal life. Nothing in this life will come between us and God and the fulfillment of that promise.

Prayer: Jesus, I thank you that our future is guaranteed with you because of your sacrifice on the cross. I pray that I can be mindful of the gift you have given, and open to sharing with others who need to hear the story. Amen

Faith Tip: Think about the promises you depend on in this life and contrast them to the promise you have in Christ. Which one do you serve more?

It's All for God

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, - Colossians 3:23

I remember as a child doing schoolwork believing that whoever did it the fastest did it best. I still see children trying to rush through their homework not only to just get it done, but to show they are good at it. We all know what happens when we rush through things; mistakes are made. Even as adults, we try to cross the next thing off our “to do” list perhaps to show how competent we are and the amount of things we can get done in a day. Rushing through any task will cause errors.

In the things we are called to do, or make a choice to do, we need to have God involved in it. Our work is more than slapping something together and calling it good. Thankfully, that’s not how God creates. God put great love into all of his work. If the Lord is in what we do, all we do should be for him.

Prayer: God, I thank you for all the things you have for me to do each day. I pray that I not rush through them and take pleasure in serving you through these tasks. Amen

Faith Tip: Invite God to join you in all you do and experience the joy of serving God fully.

Relationship vs. Knowledge

BINGO! Isn’t it fun when you’re the one yelling it? Bingo is a nice, easy game that most people can play. There are other games that can stretch us painfully mentally like Jeopardy, Trivia Pursuit (before you have the answers memorized) and others that seem to measure how much knowledge we have. I, for one, am always excited when I can answer one question among the many tough ones asked. My husband, however, excels at these types of questions for he has a great interest in history and geography, but don’t ask him about the great classic movies … that’s my department.

Aren’t we glad that it doesn’t take being a rocket scientist to be in the family of God? His love is more than facts and figures. It is a relationship … a relationship God started for he first loved us. To be filled with God takes being in relationship with him. As we spend time with the Creator of the universe, God will show us amazing things mostly about who he is and who we are to him. God’s love is more powerful than any amount of knowledge. That’s a fact you can depend on.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I do thank you for your love that is greater than all things. I pray that I may enjoy our relationship today and allow you to work through me. Amen

Faith Tip: If you are feeling unworthy because you believe you lack the knowledge to do anything for God, bask in the great love he has for you and allow him to work through you. God has great plans for you.

Knowing the Rules or the Ruler

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. – 2 Corinthians 3:6

I have found over the years that people seem to have their own set of rules for the game Monopoly. It’s usually nothing drastic, but just putting their own spin on the game to make it more enjoyable for them. However, when participating in a Monopoly tournament, there are only one set of rules that is dictated by the judge of the event.

Our Christian life is somewhat like that as we read God’s word and interpret it through our life and experiences. We are blessed with spiritual leaders to help us discern God’s truth, but it is the Holy Spirit himself that tells us the right way to go. Being confident in our daily walk is a gift; it is life giving. Jesus desires us to be free through the Spirit. If we thoroughly follow the law, which we can’t fully do being human, and don’t follow the Spirit, we imprison ourselves.

God, Jesus and the Spirit know the law frontwards and backwards. They created it. They will not steer us in a wrong direction but keep us on the right path.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for your word and all it has meant to us. I pray that I may seek and follow your Spirit every moment. Amen

Faith Tip: Knowing the Spirit of God is important. If you haven’t kept in touch lately, make time to spend together.

Let's Go Over It Again

So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. – Isaiah 41:10

Time and time again, I find myself worrying and being fearful about one thing or another. I can’t control most of the circumstances and I think that’s what causes my fear. I can’t fix it. I have no other choice than to trust God.

It seems that when God has a message that he wants us to fully understand and not forget, it will be in the Bible repeatedly. God talks a lot about fear in the Scriptures. He knew that we would soon forget and easily become fearful from life’s circumstances. Humanly speaking, it is very difficult if not impossible not be fearful at one time or another. It can be fearful just to read the newspaper or watch the news. But God wants us to know, understand, live out and trust that he is with us and will uphold us even during the darkest times.

Prayer: Jesus, you are the one I can trust with everything in my life. I pray that I can walk confidently trusting you today. Amen

Faith Tip: What has put fear in your heart today? Is it a control issue? Hand it over to God to deal with it. Is there anyone more capable?

Me...a Priest?

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. – 1 Peter 2:9

Knocking on the door of the run down building, Kim took a step back when it was opened by a woman who looked as worn as the structure. A hard life was written all over her face.

“Yes?” she said.

Kim stammered for words. “Hi, my name is Kim and I come from the church down the street. We are having some great activities coming up that we thought the community would be interested in, so I’m here to give you some information.”

The woman took the paper and said thanks. She began to turn away from the door when she stopped and turned back to Kim.

“I see you have a quilting group. I remember my mother making beautiful quilts. I always wanted to learn, but never got around to it.”

“Well, I’m part of the quilting group and it really is a great group of ladies. I would love to have you come and join us. We will show you how to quilt.”

The woman smiled. “I may just do that. Thank you!”

Kim was Jesus with skin on. She showed care to the woman who obviously needed a kind word of encouragement. We sometimes think we have to have a special “ministry job” to do the work of Christ, but we already have the role as a priest. That may seem daunting, but God called us as his special possession to go out and shine his love to those we come in contact with on a daily basis. As we have been called out of darkness, we are to help others receive that same blessing.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, that you gave me hope in times of darkness. I pray that I shine your light on the darkness I see and help others find their way to you. Amen

Huh?

That’s why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master Jesus and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus, I couldn’t stop thanking God for you—every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give thanks. But I do more than thank. I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength! – Ephesians 1:15-19 MSG

“You want me to do what?” This is usually my response to God as he asks me to once again go outside the box. It doesn’t make any sense to me most of the time. For example, I was giving a talk a few years ago and as I was going over it, the Lord impressed on my heart to share a very personal part of my life. We wrestled until 4 a.m., but you know who won. The Lord always wins one way or another. As I gave my talk, my knees were shaking as I got closer to “the part.” As I started to reveal this section of my life, one woman ran out of the room, and afterwards, three other women let me know they were going through the same thing right now and how my words gave them hope. I didn’t have a clue that these women were suffering. If one would have said she was helped, that would have been enough, but God knew all along what these women needed to hear. From this experience, my ministry has grown to women.

What are we missing when we say no to God because his call doesn’t make sense to us? As we grow to know him more intimately, we will know his voice and trust it. It will be clear to follow his direction confidently and to experience the wonderful work of his hands through us.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the gentle and not-so-gentle nudges you give me when you are ready to do something through me. I pray for clarity that it is from you and that my answer will always be yes. Amen

Faith Tip: Do you feel the nudge of God today to do something out of the box? Pray for discernment, and if you feel it is from God, say yes.

Beware of Easy Answers

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. – 1 Peter 5:8-9

When life is hard and full of challenge, we want a quick fix … even thinking that today would be a good day for the Lord to return. However, that’s usually not the answer and most challenges can’t be overcome by a quick fix. It is during these times when we are most vulnerable to temptation. There’s an offer to get you out of your challenge, if you do this or that. We need to discern if the offer is of God or of the enemy. What is the big picture?

There are many lessons that God wants to teach us and sometimes it is through the struggles in life that the lessons come. If we choose to accept an offer that perceives to end our challenge, are we refusing the lesson from God?

Pray about what God would have you do in the midst of trouble. He hasn't left you alone to figure it out for yourself. He is journeying with you and has the answer that is perfect.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for continually helping me grow in my spiritual walk. I pray that I only look to you for answers of my struggles and not a quick fix. Amen

Faith Tip: Are you struggling in an area of your life and want to get rid of the stress and worry? Beware that you do not fall prey to Satan and his temptations and reach out to Jesus for help.

Spirit of Unity

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. – Ephesians 4:3-6

Last night the church met together at our annual congregational meeting. I am thankful for all the people that were present at that meeting. As the pastor, it was encouraging to see such commitment and participation in the life of the church. It was not an easy meeting because of the difficult decisions that were made due to our financial constraints. As the church walked together through these tough decisions, I felt an overwhelming sense of unity and peace in the body of Christ.

In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul urges the church to make every effort to stay united in the Spirit. Paul knows that God can do great things through a church that lives in unity. Although, difficult decisions were made, I am certain that because of the unity within our church, God will continue to move us forward in ministry in powerful and wonderful ways.

Prayer: Lord, we pray for our church as we move into the future. We pray that you will bless the church’s ministries so that we can be a part of bringing your Kingdom to earth just as it is in heaven. Amen.

Faith Tip: As a church let us hold on to the spirit of unity that we experienced last night and as one let us be faithful in following God’s call.

Nobody Knows My Sorrows

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. – Isaiah 53:3

Often in the midst of suffering and sorrow we can feel isolated, because certainly we are the only ones who can truly feel our physical and emotional pains. This isolation can cause us to believe that we are the only ones who are suffering and we believe that no one can understand what we are going through. It reminds me of the words of that old spiritual song, “Nobody knows the troubles I’ve seen, nobody knows my sorrows.” This feeling of isolation in the midst of trouble can bring us to an even deeper level of sorrow.

The good news is that we are not alone in our suffering. The scriptures tell us that Jesus was a man of sorrows and suffering. This doesn’t mean that he had only an intellectual knowledge about suffering, but it tells us that Jesus was familiar with suffering. He knows exactly what you are dealing with. He knows how it feels, because he has experienced it. No matter what you are going through, whether your suffering is physical, emotional, spiritual, or financial you are not alone. Jesus has been there before and he knows exactly how you feel and he is there to help you through your times of troubles.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for being with me in the midst of my suffering. Help me to remember that you know what I am going through and feeling. Let me rest in you as you help me through my times of trouble. Amen.

Faith Tip: Are you going through some trouble today? Do you know someone who is going through a tough time? If so remember or help someone else remember that Jesus has been there and he is right with you now to comfort you and help you.

The Variety in God's Creation

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. – Genesis 1:11

I have been helping my daughter, Alyssa, with her leaf project for her sixth grade science class. This project entails gathering leaves from twenty different trees and identifying the type of tree by its leaf. This can be difficult at times to differentiate, for example, a black oak from a pin oak or a red maple from a sugar maple. Helping Alyssa with this project has made me aware of how many different varieties of trees there are in God’s creation.

When God created the trees he could have created one type of tree, but he didn’t. In Genesis it says that God created various kinds of trees, each one different with different bark, trunks, branches and leaves. This difference is what makes our world so beautiful and we see that beauty especially this time of year as the leaves change to vibrant colors of orange, yellow and red.

Like the trees God created each one of us different, with different personalities, experiences, looks, abilities, languages, etc… God could have made us all the same, but he didn’t. And our differences make the world a beautiful place to live.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the beauty of your creation. Thank you for the infinite variety that makes this world an interesting and beautiful place to live. Help me to embrace these differences and see the beauty in every part of your creation and in every person. Amen.

Faith Tip: Take a walk today or sometime soon and see how many different types of trees you see as you enjoy the beauty of God’s creation.

The Power of Relationship

The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”

So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword. – Exodus 17:8-13

This past weekend, I spent some quality time with God’s people. It was a pilgrimage. Together we journeyed in discovering more about God. What did we discover? God’s great love for us expressed through each other. We found out that we needed one another not only through the weekend, but perhaps more after the weekend.

Gathering together in God’s name is a call. We were never meant to travel life alone. Yes, we have the Holy Spirit inside of us and I praise God for that, but there is another element needed in those God puts in our life. Sometimes the relationship is life-long and sometime just for a season, but they are both crucial for our spiritual makeup.

The power of God’s love and grace is dynamic when people that follow Jesus gather together. It must be experienced for it can never be fully described in words. I encourage you to make plans to get together with some friends and family who know what this means, and be ready to show others who don’t know the great bond they are missing.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the relationships you have brought into my life, especially my relationship with you. I pray that I demonstrate the power of your love to those I come in contact with today. Amen

Limited Knowledge

The other day I was telling my daughter Joy how she was born with a hole in her heart. I told her it was a God shaped hole. Her eyes grew big and she said, “Really?” I told her “No, not really?” But as I thought about it I wondered, “How do I know?” I can’t see inside her heart and if I could, I don’t know the shape of God. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Since the time that Adam and Eve ate from the Tree of Knowledge humans have over-estimated the knowledge they actually have. We tend to think that we know more than we actually do. We uphold ideas as concrete truths when in actuality they are no more than a hypothesis or a guess. When you really think about it, our knowledge is very limited, especially compared to the knowledge of God. That is why we must always lean not on our own understanding, but trust in the Lord with all our heart.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the knowledge that you have given to me. Forgive me when I think too highly of my limited knowledge and follow my own understanding instead of trusting completely in you. Amen.

Faith Tip: Is there a decision in your life that you are trying to make? If so look at what you know and what you don’t know and then seek God’s will and direction to make the right decision.

A Little Glimpse of Heaven

The wolf will live with the lamb,
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearlingtogether;
and a little child will lead them. - Isaiah 11:6

Last night the Critter Barn came to Grace (see the picture). The Intersection was turned into a barn as there were goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits and a lot of straw. However, the exciting part of the entire evening was the number of people that came to see the animals. The community turned out it great numbers and their where many children laughing and smiling as they held the rabbits and petted the goats.

In Isaiah, the Lord, gives us a small picture of heaven. It is a picture where little children peacefully coexist with the animals. Last night, as we saw many different ethnicities gathered together, many different ages, and little children interacting with the animals, I believe we truly saw a little glimpse of heaven here on earth.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the wonderful evening we had at Grace as the community gathered together to have a fun and enjoyable time with the animals. Thank you for the promise of heaven and the small glimpses you give to us to renew our hope. Amen.

Marching In Step With Jesus

He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; - Colossians 1:17-18a

Last night my family attended a marching band festival to watch my daughter march for West Ottawa’s band. (This is a picture of the band.) It was enjoyable to see the various schools’ march. It is amazing how all those students can play such powerful and beautiful music while at the same time marching around the field in perfect precision. This is all because every band has at least one or two drum majors that stand at the front of the band and provide direction. Without these leaders the band members would be marching to their own beat and playing whatever tempo they felt like. It would go from something beautiful to something chaotic.

The church is like a marching band, we are held together by the head who is Jesus Christ. He is the one who stands at the front and provides direction. In order to carry out ministry with power and precision the church must continually keeps its focus on Christ. When the focus is not on Christ then there is no leadership and everyone in the church begins to march to their own beat and do what they want to do, and this leads to chaos in the church. Christ is the head and he holds all things together.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for being the leader of my life. Help me to keep my focus on you so that I can make beautiful music with my life. Forgive me when I take my eyes off you. Amen.

Oh, To Be Seen

From heaven the LORD looks down
and sees all mankind;
from his dwelling place he watches
all who live on earth— Psalm 33:13-14

When I was a young boy, my little brother and I would watch a TV show called “Romper Room.” At the end of each show the hostess would look through her “magic mirror” and name all the children that she could see out in “televisionland.” My brother and I would always sit close to the TV hoping that one day she might see us. She would always see children with names like Bob, Mary, Susie, Tommy, but no matter how close we sat to the TV she could never see little boys with names like Aaron and Arnie.

I think it is human nature to want to be seen. Deep down we want to be noticed to assure us that there is someone who cares. Scripture tells us that the Lord looks down from heaven and he sees us. We can take comfort in knowing that not only does God see us, but he watches over us because he cares about us. We don’t have to worry about not being seen, because God, our Creator, loves us and watches over all that we do. He notices us!

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you watch over me both day and night. I am so glad that you notice me. Help me to see you better. Amen.

Faith Tip: Take a little time today to think about God looking down from heaven and watching you. Take comfort in know that you are noticed!

Today is Columbus Day. It is a national holiday to celebrate the discovery of

America

. Over 500 years ago Christopher Columbus set sail across a vast ocean not knowing what was on the other side. He did not know what he might find, the problems he might encounter or even if he would ever return home. Despite the unknowns, Columbus set off on an adventure that led him to the discovery of a vast new land that we now call home.

The Christian faith is a lot like Columbus’ exploration. Through life we seek to find more and more about God. As we grow deeper in our knowledge of who God is, we find that there is even more to be discovered. We will never be able to fully understand God, but it is an exciting adventure to seek and discover new things about God each and every day.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you are greater than I will ever know, but you are not unknown. Thank you that when I seek you, I always discover new things about who you are. Help me to continue to grow in my knowledge of you. Amen.

Faith Tip: Try to discover one new thing about God today in prayer, Bible reading, study or just seeing how God is at work in the world.

Lift Rather Than Carry

I have recently heard about the struggles of numerous people in my life and my love and prayers go out to them. I continually think of them and lift them up to God. It’s difficult to see people go through these difficult times in their lives, but I know God is in it. If I didn’t have God to trust with these people, it would be depressing. But I know that God’s power is real and working all the time. I feel confident that whatever is the outcome in these dear ones’ lives that it will be “big picture” good for God turns all the ashes into beauty for His name’s sake.

Consider the struggles you have gone through or perhaps someone you know. At the time, I’m sure it was difficult to praise God, but as you look back can you see how He was involved? Difficulties shape us. We are made stronger and more into the image of Jesus as we journey through challenges and learn from them. How good to know that no matter what we are going through that God brings us to a place of abundance. It may not be in this life, but it is definite in eternal life.

Prayer: God, I thank you for the work you have done in my life. There have been ups and downs and you were there through it all. I praise you for your goodness in my life. Amen

Faith Tip: If you are going through struggles now or before, think about what you have been learning from God and how you are changing. Give God praise for the great work done in you.

It'll Last an Eternity

Trust in the LORD forever,

Quality is something we look for when shopping for important items such as houses, cars and clothes. We want these things to last a long time so that we don’t have to repeat the cycle of purchasing new again. Investing our time and money into such finds is an important task. We want to hear and trust those words, “It’ll last a lifetime.”

God gives us the best offer over all other things. We can trust the Lord not only in this lifetime, but eternally. God will never wear out, disappear or break. He is a constant that will be with us and uphold us forever. God is a sound investment for us.

We don’t need to fear anything that life throws at us for God is all over it. So when we are tossed a ball of chaos in life, we can use our super slugger bat of Jesus Christ to hit a home run.

Prayer: Jesus, thank you that you hang on to me even in the times I feel I am on a high wire. Your safety net of love, pole of grace, and bicycle of mercy helps me to get across the wire. I pray that I not go walking in those high places without you by my side. Amen

Faith Tip: Is there something in your life that makes you feel you are walking a tight rope? Look to Jesus to get across safely.

Bless, Not Waste

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. – John 6:10-13

As a country, we are truly blessed. Most people have enough food, clothing and shelter to sustain them each day. We are given just enough. Sometimes we are given more than enough. What happens to those blessings that are beyond what we need to survive? Being so blessed, we are also a country known for great wasting habits. I believe we don’t realize the fullness of our wastefulness. If we did, I think we would be appalled.

God blesses us to be a blessing. Could we put some time and energy into figuring how we could bless others with what we’ve been given so graciously? Recycling is a blessing to others for it helps the earth we all live on. How about cleaning up roads and bodies of water? What do we clean them up from? Waste. God is the giver of great gifts. Let us honor him with showing respect and true appreciation for his gifts.

Prayer: Lord, when I think of all the things you have blessed me with, I stand in awe of you. Your love is apparent as you provide for me and lavish me with your love. May I not waste your love and share it with others. Amen

Faith Tip: Take some time to focus on all you’ve been given. How can you bless another with your blessings?

Plan to Follow

Do not boast about tomorrow,

I don’t know about you, but my days can get packed with a lot of things to do. It is usually all good things and I look forward to them. Some of the things I look forward to doing are going with a friend to ArtPrize, having my sister over for dinner, and going on retreat in a week. I believe these things will happen and I plan my life around them, but the truth is I have no idea what God has planned for me these days. God’s plan may look totally different than mine and I need to be open to that. What God places in my path will be for the kingdom and I am to follow in obedience. I am a servant of God. Whose plans I follow will show who I am serving.

I think the best we can do is to keep in communication with God to know what is on his heart. Through prayer and reading the Bible, we know God’s heart more and will be able to respond easier to the call on our lives. Keeping our spiritual eyes open and on watch for what God is doing will help us not to miss what he is doing. We cannot boast about what a day holds for God creates each day. Whether there are good times or struggles, God is always working to grow us into the image of Jesus. To God be the glory.

Prayer: Thank you, God, for each day. The thought and detail you put into the day is amazing. I pray that I can keep my eyes watching for you and what you are doing and follow along in obedience. Amen

Yea! It's a New Day!

Gathering together as God’s people to worship is an encouragement to all believers. We are not only encouraged to live in obedience to God, but also reminded of his victory over death.

Somehow after we walk out the door of the church, the excitement seems to wane. Let’s keep the excitement going by intentionally worshiping God each day. By the time we gather again to worship, we will be pumped up to give God our all. God loves a cheerful giver.

Prayer: Lord, you are amazing. Thank you for the great love you have poured on me. I pray that I can keep the excitement going this week for who you are in worshiping you each day. Amen

Faith Tip: Praise God today for all he is to you. Each morning, give God more glory.

The Best Medicine

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. – Proverbs 17:22

We have all heard the old saying, “Laughter makes the best medicine.” Over the years studies have shown that there is nothing that ails you that can’t be helped with a little bit of laughter. Laughing helps to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, strengthen the immune system and improve memory, alertness and creativity. Laughter is also good medicine for community. Humor unites people and laughter is understood in any language. Laughter truly is good medicine.

However, life can sometimes take away our reason to laugh. For some it may be hard to remember the last time they had a good laugh. Too many people today are living with crushed spirits and dried up bones. This is not the way God intended for us to live. He wants us to have a cheerful heart, to laugh and enjoy life. When we believe in Jesus and place our life in his hands, he renews a right spirit within us and cures our dried up bones with a good dose of laughter and joy. Take a dose of that good medicine today and find a reason to laugh.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the gift of laughter. Renew my spirit today so that I may find joy in life. Allow me to smile more often then frown and laugh more than I complain. Amen.

Faith Tip: Maybe today you don’t feel like laughing and that is okay. A person can’t go from sadness to laughter all at once, but they can take small steps in the right direction. A little smile, a joyful thought or reading a humorous story may not bring laughter right away, but it can put us on the path to joy.

Children of the Promise

In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. – Romans 9:8

The other day as I was waiting for my youngest daughter Joy to finish her tap dancing class, the parents were commenting on the energy and enthusiasm of the children. One mother said, “I wish I could be a child again.” I expect this mother’s wish is a common wish for many adults. Wouldn’t it be nice to be a child again, living a life with little worry, no concern about providing for your needs, living a life filled with joy, energy and enthusiasm?

The good news is that wish comes true for us in Jesus Christ. As Paul tells us in Romans, through Jesus Christ we are children again. As children of the promise we are God’s adopted child. Which means that God will love, care and provide for us just as a loving parent provides for their children. Therefore we do not need to live a life of worry and concern. We can just rest in the arms of the Lord and live life with joy, energy and enthusiasm. This is the kind of life that God intended for his children. Makes you want to dance doesn’t it?

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you have adopted me as your child. Thank you that you love, provide and care for me. Forgive me when I forget to trust in you and allow my worries to overwhelm me. Help me live a life that is filled with joy knowing that I am a child of the promise. Amen.

Faith Tip: What is one thing you miss from your childhood? Is it safety, security, love, family, freedom, joy, fun, etc…. Whatever it is, remind yourself that you still have that as a child of God.

Looking Through the Fog

For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. – 1 Corinthians 13:12

It is a dreary and foggy morning. As I was driving this morning I noticed how the fog makes everything look less colorful, somewhat out-of-focus and more difficult to see. Here on the lakeshore fog is a common occurrence on cool fall mornings, until the sun comes out and burns it away.

Paul says living on earth is like living in a spiritual fog. Sin, in the world, dulls God’s colorful creation and blurs our focus on Christ. Because of the fog of sin, we are unable to clearly see and understand the Lord’s will for our life and for the world. It is as if we are looking only at a reflection. But one day the Son will come and the fog of sin will be lifted and then we will see and know fully God and his will.

Prayer: Lord, give me eyes of discernment so that I can see you better through the fog of sin. I look forward to the day when Christ will come again and I shall see you face to face. Amen.

Faith Tip: Although we may struggle to fully understand God’s will for our life and the world, we can be assured that although we do not understand it, God’s will is good and perfect. Find comfort today in that assurance.

Faith Patterns

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. – Exodus 20:8-9

When Julie makes clothes for our children she always follows a pattern. The pattern helps her know exactly where to cut and sew the fabric so that the finished piece fits correctly and looks nice. If she didn’t have a pattern to follow, no matter how good a seamstress she might be, the clothing would turn out to be a mess.

In the same way God has established patterns to follow in our lives. In this scripture from Exodus, God provides a pattern for our days. He has also established patterns for worship and celebration. As Christians we have patterns within the church calendar and Christian holidays. These patterns of our faith help us to keep balance and stability in our life. When we follow these patterns it provides a “good fit” for our faith. Often, we resist patterns and want to do things our own way. We get bored with same old thing and we want to change it up. However, when we fail to follow God’s patterns, our life often will turn out to be a mess.

Prayer: Thank you Lord, for providing a pattern for my life. Help me to follow the patterns that you have established so that my faith will continue to grow. Forgive me when I fail to follow your patterns and stray from you ways. Amen.

Gifted Service

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. – Romans 12:6a

Last night we enjoyed a wonderful time as we gathered to celebrate the gifts of our church at the annual Gifted Service. There were singers, instrumentalists, readings, beautiful crafts and art, delicious bake goods and a Spirit filled time of singing and praise. It was exciting to see the unique and special gifts that each had to share from young to old.

All these gifts were a testament to the greatness of God. In God’s creative plan he did not make us all the same, instead he created us all uniquely and different in our own way. The diversity in God’s creation is what makes life interesting and enjoyable. We can praise God that we all have unique gifts that make us special and that can be used in different ways to serve in his Kingdom.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for making me special. Thank you for the gifts that I have been given according to your grace. Help me to find ways to use these gifts to serve your Kingdom. Amen.

Beauty from Ashes

And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. – Romans 5:2-5

As I lay in the MRI machine yesterday, I remembered how a couple of years ago I was brought into the battle of cancer. It was a time of uncertainty as I experienced one test after another, the surgery, chemo and radiation. I now have check-ups that are finally slowing down on the schedule, including the annual MRI test.

Through the last couple of years, God has been faithful in producing in me hope. This is the kind of hope that has a strong foundation to stand on called Jesus. Jesus makes all the difference in the world in everything.

Two days ago, I spent time with a woman in the hospital going through the same surgery I had two years ago. Because of how God carried me through, I was able to encourage her that God would be there for her, too. If God didn’t do this work in me, I wouldn’t have been able to encourage her.

When you are going through a challenge, embrace all the teachings of it knowing God will use it for his kingdom purpose. God knows every detail in our life experience and will use it for good. He has the power to make beauty from ashes.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the work you have done in my life. I pray that each day I recognize your teachings and apply them to my life. Amen

Faith Tip: Consider your trials today and what God may be teaching you through them.

You Were Chosen

Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. – Romans 15:7

Please pick me! I don’t want to be last again, the young girl thought as the students were being chosen by their classmates. Some of us know the anxiety and pain this young girl felt. We were the last to be chosen leaving a deep scar in the heart with the message that we weren’t really wanted.

If we chose teams like this in church, what would our team look like? Would we choose the most beautiful and popular people so our side would really look good, or would we really want everyone on our team? Who would Jesus choose?

He already has. The ones who surround you in worship have been chosen to be a part of that church. To experience the full benefit of bring praise and worship to God, we must accept one another wholeheartedly – just like Jesus.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for accepting me to be part of your family. I pray that I fully accept those around me as we gather to worship you with shared hearts. Amen

Faith Tip: Do you feel accepted? You must feel accepted before you can fully accept others. Jesus has accepted you. Live out that truth.

Living With Risk

Seeing children at school once again in the fall is always a fun time for me. It’s amazing how much they grow from one year to the next. I love to hear what they did during the summer and what they like about school so far this year. I also find it amazing how well all the students seem to get along and actually spur one another on to do good and achieve more. They genuinely seem to care about one another. It’s a gift they give to one another.

We as Christians also have the opportunity to enjoy the gifts that God has given us in grace, love and fellowship. These are not gifts to put away to keep safe, but gifts we use every day with vulnerability. There is a risk in actively living grace, love and fellowship with one another. But it is a risk well worth taking for if we didn’t, we would not know the true richness of being one with Christ. The human experience is full of ups and downs where our hearts are bruised, but the beauty comes from the overall experience of living as Christ. He is the one who heals and strengthens us for his higher calling.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for the calling you have on my life. The challenges I have experienced have made me stronger and more able to serve where you have called me. I pray that I follow you closely each day knowing you are always there with me. Amen

Faith Tip: Be vulnerable today in living out grace, love and fellowship. You are blessed to be a blessing.

The Season of Abundance

for he has given you the autumn rains
   because he is faithful.
He sends you abundant showers,
   both autumn and spring rains, as before. – Joel 2:23

I have a friend who lives in Texas where a drought has been experienced. She emailed me the other day with great excitement that it was raining. I don’t remember the last time I was excited about rain for I pretty much take it for granted.

Don’t we do that with most of God’s blessings? He is so faithful to give us what we need in all seasons, and we don’t recognize it or worse feel it is because of what we have done.

Today let us be glad and rejoice in what God has done for us. Praise him for these cooler temps and for the beautiful colors that are changing on the trees. Thank God for all provision especially for the gift of Jesus.

Prayer: Dear Lord, I do thank you for all that you give to me today. I pray I recognize you as the source of all my provision. Amen

Faith Tip: Give God a sacrifice of praise today for all he has done for you.

Gentle Warfare

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. – Philippians 4:5

On a day of running errands, I seem to come across an abundance of rudeness such as cars cutting in front of me, a service person not wanting to look at my desk lamp I brought in to see if it could be fixed and going to a restaurant with a friend where the waitress seemed to think we were invisible. Gentleness seemed distant. I saw this verse earlier in the day for a reason. I had to mentally play it through my mind in each instance of interactive challenge I experienced that day. I believe it was through gritted teeth I spoke of this verse to my friend in our restaurant dilemma.

I don’t know why we all experience days like this. I do know that the Lord is always near and cheers us on to do what is right. Perhaps it is an exercise of endurance, a test, or maybe just a time to see how far we have come in patience. The goal is to honor God with all we do. Hopefully, next time I won’t feel the frustration as much choosing the road of experiencing peace rather than feeling wrath.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the unending patience you have for me. I pray that I will be filled with your patience and trust you in all situations. Amen

Faith Tip: When you come across a frustrating situation today, remember the verse and choose the road of peace.

Waiting

Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. - Psalm 27:14

This morning we had to wait for the school bus to come. We waited and waited, until finally we gave up and I drove the girls to school. Waiting is difficult. Waiting is difficult when things don’t happen or people don’t act on our schedule or according to our plans.

God doesn’t act according to our plans and on our schedule. God acts in his own time, but we can be assured that God’s timing is perfect and will never be wrong. So when a prayer doesn’t get answered when we think it should, or when healing or help doesn’t occur when we want it to, that doesn’t mean God isn’t acting, or isn’t listening or doesn’t care. It just means we need to grow in patience and wait on the Lord, even though it is not easy. God’s timing is always right.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that your timing is always right. Forgive me when I become impatient and act on my own time instead of waiting on you. Give me more patience and faith. Amen.

Faith Tip: What are you waiting for from the Lord? Become more patient by focusing on the fact that God is working and he is waiting for just the right time to bring about what you are waiting for.

God's Dwelling Place

LORD, I love the house where you live, the place where your glory dwells. – Psalm 26

King David loved the house of the Lord. We don’t know the exact place to which David was referring. It could have been the tabernacle that was in Gibeon. It might have been the tent structure that David had set-up in Jerusalem to hold the Ark of the Covenant. Maybe it was a place by an outdoor altar. Where ever it was, it must have been a place that King David liked to go to feel close to God.

Although God is everywhere, there are special places in our life where we feel God’s presence in unique and special ways. Like David, these are the places we long to be. I am reminded of a song in the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” when the main character, Tevye, is dreaming of how he would spend his time if he was wealthy and didn’t have to work so hard. He says, “If I were rich, I'd have the time that I lack to sit in the synagogue and pray. And maybe have a seat by the Eastern wall. And I'd discuss the holy books with the learned men, several hours every day. That would be the sweetest thing of all.”

It is a sweet thing to be in a place where we feel the presence of God. It brings us peace, contentment, and to a place of quiet rest. Where is that place for you? Make some time today to go to that place and be in God’s presence.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you are with me where ever I go. Thank you that you provide me with special places in my life where I feel your presence in unique and special ways. Give me more time in my schedule to be in your presence. Amen.

Faith Tip: Where is a place where you feel God’s presence in a special way? Is it a church, an outdoor chapel, a quiet place of meditation…Where ever it might be, make time to visit that place and be with the Lord.

God's Control is Perfect

He made the moon to mark the seasons, and the sun knows when to go down. – Psalm 104:19

This morning, I looked up in the sky and saw the sun rising in the east and the moon setting in the west. With a backdrop of a bright blue sky and big white billowy clouds, it was a beautiful sight and reminded me of the greatness of our Creator. It was a great way to start the day and a wonderful reminder of who is in control of this day. It is God who tells the sun when to set and when to rise. It is God who tells the heat of summer to give way to the cool crisp fall air. It is God who is in control.

It is comforting to know that our loving Creator is in control of everything in his creation. It is also comforting to know that God controls creation in such way to bring a sense of assurance and stability in our life instead of in a way that would cause us chaos and worry. God created the seasons and the days so that we know what to expect and how to plan. We know when to plant and when to harvest, when to pull out the coats and when to put on the shorts. We know how many hours of daylight we have to finish our work and when the night will come to prepare for bedtime. God’s is in control and his control is perfect and loving.

Prayer: Thank you Lord, that you are in control of your beautiful creation. Thank you, that your control brings a sense of peace and assurance to our daily lives. Your creation reveals the vastness of your love. Amen.

Faith Tip: As summer gently fades into fall and as the daylight gives way to dusk, take some time to thank God for the wonderful way he controls his creation.

What is the Question?

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. – John 14:6

We had just pulled into a parking lot when I spotted a bumper sticker on the car parked in front of us that read, “Jesus is the answer.” I decided to have some fun with the kids, so I asked them to give me a math problem. My elementary aged daughter gave me a simple addition problem to which I quickly replied, “Jesus.” Then my middle-school aged daughter tried to stump me with an algebra problem and I said, “The answer is Jesus!” My high-school son jumped into the game with a tough calculus problem to which I answered, “That is an easy one, the answer is Jesus.” By now my kids were wondering if their dad had lost his marbles and asked me why I was always responding with the answer of “Jesus.” It was then that I pointed to the bumper sticker and we all had a good laugh.

Jesus may not be the answer to a math problem, or to a computer problem or to the problem that’s causing your car to make that funny noise, but Jesus is the answer to life problems, to broken-heart problems, to problems with sin. Have you lost your way in life? Jesus is the way. Do you wonder who or what you can trust in life? Jesus is the truth. Do you feel like you have no joy or fulfillment in life? Jesus is the life. When life seems to have no answers, turn to Jesus.

Prayer: Thank you Jesus that you are the answer to life’s difficult questions. Help me to seek the answer to life’s questions in you and not other things in life. Thank you for providing me with a way, with truth and with life. Amen.

Faith Tip: What is the big life question that you are struggling with or worrying about today? Take time right now to seek the answer in Jesus Christ.

Objects of Worship

Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you. – Acts 17:22-23

As Paul walked through the city of Athens he noticed their many objects of worship. He saw objects, statues, altars and temples made from gold, silver and stone and crafted by human hands. Paul knew that these people wanted to believe and worship something or someone, but they had placed their belief and directed their worship in all the wrong places.

If Paul were to walk around in your home, what objects of worship might he find? A television, pocketbook, iPad, computer, smart phone, sports team, job, person, car, clothes, hobby … The list could go on and on and would be different for each of us. Not that any of these things are bad, but if they begin to consume our time, thoughts and activity then they become our object of worship.

We were created to be religious people; which means we were created to worship. Unfortunately, like the Athenians, we fill that need with false gods rather than with the one true God. Is there an object of worship in your life that is keeping you from worshipping God? If so, re-direct your worship towards God alone.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for placing within me the desire to worship you. Forgive me when I fill that desire by worshipping something or someone else. Help me to keep my worship focused on you and you alone. Amen.

Faith Tip: If there is something in your life that takes up a lot of you time, consider taking a fast from it and use that time to focus on God. For example, turn the TV off for a day or two and use that time to read the Bible.

Healing Words of Grace

Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. – Proverbs 16:24

I’ll never forget the time when I was working at a bank and the president wanted me to transcribe a tape for him. He said it had a lot of important information on it. I put it on my desk with a couple of other tapes I was working on. After the tapes were transcribed, I would need to then delete the information on the tape by putting it through an erasing mechanism.

After finishing the tape I was working on, I grabbed the wrong tape and erased it. In fact, I grabbed the most important tape on the desk and erased it. I then thought about what I would need to collect on my desk as I was sure I would be escorted out after my mistake came to light. I slowly walked down the long hall to the president’s office … kind of in a daze. I knocked on his door. I swallowed hard as I walked in and hung my head in shame as I explained what happened to his tape and apologized.

He took in a breath. My breathing stopped. He then smiled and said not to worry. That he would record it again since it was still pretty fresh in his mind. When I received the tape from him, I instantly put it in the transcription machine and the first words out of the tape were, “This has been recorded on a non-erasable tape.”

The grace shown to me by this man of God was so healing to me. I learned a lot about grace that day. I saw and experienced Jesus in the president’s words and actions. He reflected the one he followed.

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the grace you have shown me. I pray that I can reflect that to others each day. Amen

Faith Tip: Reflect Jesus today when someone you come in contact with needs that special gift of grace.

Tumbling Down the Slope

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. Psalm 143:10

Our yard is not level on one side. I will never forget when he had a campfire with friends sitting around in their lawn chairs, and one friend leaned over a little too much towards the slope. They tumbled down the hill with their chair following.

In walking with God, the path we follow is narrow and there are always temptations to sit on the edge of the incline. We believe we are safe from any fall, but we lean a bit too much towards the enticement and before we know it, we are tumbling.

Staying on solid ground is done through closely following God. Reading his word fills us with the stable teachings we need for the journey. The Holy Spirit reminds and guides us as we walk. Prayer keeps us focused on the right direction. Praise to Jesus for being our firm and level foundation.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank you for helping me step by step walk the path set before me. I pray that I keep my eye on your light and follow, not being distracted by the pulls of the world. Amen

Faith Tip: Consider all the things you do today in light of staying on level ground.

Happy Anniversary!

At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. – Matthew 22:30

Today is my wedding anniversary. The years have gone by quickly and as I think back on all that my husband and I have gone through, it makes me even more grateful that he was there to experience life with me. Through the tough times, we held each other up, and through the happy times, we danced.

God created marriage knowing that we would need that person in our life. Our humanness makes us dependent mostly on God, but also on others. God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.” God provides for those who do live alone in different ways. God says he will be our husband (Isaiah 54:5).

It’s going to be very different in eternity. There will be no need for marriage for we will all be focused on our Husband, Jesus Christ … a marriage made in heaven.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for my husband. I praise you for being at the center of our marriage helping us when we needed it and celebrating with us during good times. I pray that I can be the wife you want me to be here on earth in preparation for eternity. Amen

Faith Tip: Be mindful and thankful for the people God has put in your life. They are there for a purpose.

Feeling Safe by Obeying

Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” – John 14:23

What images or feelings come to mind when you hear the word “obey”? If you are like many people, there is an instant resistance to be told what to do. This is part of our human nature and goes against what the world tells us in serving ourselves first. Think of the people you had to obey as you were growing up. There were parents, grandparents, babysitters, teachers, policemen, pastors and more. Although there was a tug inside not to obey, there may have been another underlying feeling of safety. Obeying those in authority that you trust gives you security.

Safety in God’s hands means to obey him. Rebelling against the Lord puts us in danger of hurting ourselves or others. There is no better way that we can show God that we love him than by listening and following his instructions. The journey God has us on is perfect as long as we obey.

Prayer: I thank you, Jesus, for the plan you have for my life. Forgive me for the times I have chosen another route. I pray that today I can listen closely to you and follow. Amen

Faith Tip: Make a choice at the beginning of the day that you are going to follow God. When you are tempted to disobey, focus on God to keep you on track.

9 to 5...it can be so much more

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. – 1 Corinthians 15:58

I’ve worked a lot of different jobs over the years that have helped me grow into who I am today. I have learned that the heart (the attitude) I have for the work makes all the difference in the world in what I am doing. If I don’t like what I’m doing, and my reason for doing it is a paycheck, there is really no satisfaction in that and little honor to God. Knowing that God provides work for me should give it special meaning in my life where I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as God’s employee.

Working for the Lord is the best work in the world. The benefits are out of this world. It’s not just pastors that do the work of the Lord, but we are all called to work for Him. No matter what type of work we do, whether it is a job or working around home, volunteering, or helping someone, it is all work for the Lord. We can give of ourselves fully without fear that it is a waste of time. God has a plan for it all.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the work you give me to do. I pray that you are honored and glorified by my offering. Amen

Faith Tip: Begin your day in thanksgiving for what God has given you to do. Shine the light of Jesus in doing it.

Friends of Truth

I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts.
The earth is filled with your love, LORD; teach me your decrees. – Psalm 119:63-65

Friends are a special gift from God especially when they share the bond of love for Jesus. There is a deeper understanding of how important God is through the journey of life. For example, I am part of a Facebook group of women speakers, writers and leaders. In the worldly view, this would mean great competition, but in the godly view, this is a system of real love and support. The truth of God is shared. All of us in the group grow in this.

Celebrate the friends God has given you. Let them know how special they are to you and to God. God has filled the earth with his love in so many ways. When we look at creation, others, and what God provides for us, we experience his love.

Prayer: Lord, you are the God of abundance. Thank you for my good friends and all the ways you care for me. I pray that I will receive your blessings and bless others. Amen

Faith Tip: Focus today on the ways God shows his love for you. Appreciate your friends telling them how much they mean to you and to God.

Little Eyes and Ears

Start children off on the way they should go,
and even when they are old they will not turn from it. – Proverbs 22:6

As school season begins, we desire for children to have the best education possible. They are so hungry for knowledge and all new information from classes and life that seeps into their pores of education. Each one of us is a part of that education for the children. What they see and experience in connection with us becomes a part of their teaching.

Always be mindful of the little eyes and ears that are around you. Their character is built by the choices they make. The choices will reflect what they have learned from their environment. The more positive impact we can make on these young lives, the better choices they will make. Do they witness honesty, kindness, grace, help from adults around them, or do they pick up on the “me first” mentality prevalent in our society? If you have children, or don’t have children at home, you make an impact on children’s lives. They are watching.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for the great examples you have put in my life. I pray that I may be a positive example to children. Help me to show them your love. Amen

Drawing Closer to God

May my cry come before you, LORD; give me understanding according to your word. – Psalm 199:169

We have binoculars at our house that we use to get a closer look at the ducks that swim on the lake and for watching birds. Last night a new use was found for these binoculars. I saw Jacob sitting on the couch watching a tennis match with the binoculars in his lap. I asked him why he had the binoculars. He said he was using them to see the score on the TV. You see, we have an old 19” television set and the scores for sporting events, which are made for the large screen TVs of today, are difficult to see on such a small screen. The binoculars helped him gain a better understanding of what was going on in the tennis match.

God’s word is like a pair of binoculars. God’s word gives us a better understanding of God. Without the word of God we would not be able to truly know him. His word allows us to focus our sight upon him and draws us closer to the Lord. Imagine trying to describe a duck to someone when all you can see is a dark speck out in the lake. Then imagine how much more detailed your description would be if you had binoculars to see the duck. The same is true when we know and understand God’s word. We are better able to tell others about God.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for you word and how it gives me a better understanding of you. Help me to be in your word daily so that I can draw closer to you. Amen.

Faith Tip: Pick up God’s word today and allow his word to focus your thoughts on him and draw you closer to him.

Good Old Friends

Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the LORD” – 1 Samuel 20:42

This weekend our family had an opportunity that too many people do not get. We were able to tour the house that we lived in for three years when I was in seminary and our three older kids were little. The house has since been moved to a different location and newly remodeled inside and out. Although all these changes have been made, and it has been many years since we had been in the house, it still seemed like our home. We walked through each room as memories came flooding back reminding us of the times we enjoyed together in that house. It was as if we had never left.

Visiting that house was like visiting a good old friend. A good friend is one who you can be away from for many years and changes take place in your lives, but when you reunite it is as if you had never been apart. A good friendship is an important part of Christian life. Jonathan and David understood the importance of having a good friend in your life. The prophet Daniel had close friends. At the end of many of his letters, the Apostle Paul provides a list of his close friends. Even Jesus surrounded himself with twelve very close friends. Thomas Aquinas once said, “There is nothing on this earth more to be prized than true friendship.”

Prayer: Thank you Lord for blessing me with good friends. Help me to not take my friends for granted. Help me to strengthen my current friendships and make new ones. Amen.

Faith Tip: Today let a friend know how much their friendship means to you.

Held Back by Fear

They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there.” – Numbers 13:27-28

Today, I am taking our son, Jacob to visit the campus of Western Michigan. During this visit he will catch a glimpse of the future that God has in store for him. I am sure some of what he sees will be exciting and intimidating at the same time. The college students will probably look like giants to him, although they are only a few years older. As he thinks about all the hard work that will be required to graduate, he may become a little hesitant about wanting to jump into the future God has planned.

As the Israelites escaped from Egypt, God gave them a glimpse of the land of Canaan. It was a glimpse of what God had in store for their future. What they saw excited them as they discovered a land flowing with milk and honey, but they also saw cities and people that intimidated them. The saw how much work would need to be done in order to occupy this land and they became afraid and their faith faltered. They decided that staying in the desert was better than the future God had planned for them. Because of their fear and lack of faith, God didn’t give them the land until forty years later.

Sometimes when God gives us a glimpse of what could be, whether it is in our life, church, family, or career, it is an exciting thing. But often we are intimidated by how much work it would take to get there, and that fear makes us want to stay where we are even though we may be in a wasteland compared to where God wants us to be. Instead of letting fear keep us in the wilderness, we must trust God, embrace his plans for our future and in faith, boldly take hold of the exciting things that God has in store for us.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you always have a plan for my future and that plan is always wonderful. Forgive me when I allow fear to hold me back. Help me to trust in you and give me the courage to be willing to put in the work and make the sacrifices to move forward into your plan for my life. Amen.

Faith Tip: Has God given you a glimpse of what could be in your home, church, or life? If so, put your fear and doubts aside and decide what you have to do to be a part of all the work needed to move into that future?

Togetherness

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. – Romans 12:4-5

I recently was the keynote speaker at a women’s event at our church. It was such a great day to gather with sisters in the Lord and talk about God while we served one another in “spa moments.” Events like this usually do not happen with one person … it takes a village. There were ladies especially gifted with food, decorating, administration, hospitality, communication, music and more that made the day so special.

It’s wonderful that we don’t have all the talents and spiritual gifts ourselves. Having a dependence on one another brings us together in unity which glorifies God. This is how the church is meant to operate. Our ultimate dependence is on God who will help us join together and complete the work he has set before us. I imagine this is the way it will be in heaven … doing things together for the glory of God.

Prayer: Lord, I love to work alongside with my brothers and sisters in projects you give us. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of the bigger picture. I pray that I will obey the call you give me. Amen

Faith Tip: Has God called you to be part of a project in the Body of Christ? Consider your talents and gifts that he has given you to bless others.

Good Intentions to Keep From Stumbling

Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble. – Psalm 119:165

When caring for the physical needs of other people, such as a caregiver or physical therapist would do, there is a special tool often used called a gait belt. Gait belts help in the transfer of people who may not be steady on their feet. It keeps them from falling. Having a gait belt lying on the bed or hanging on the wall may show good intentions, but using it is the only way it works.

God’s word is the same way. The Holy Spirit works through the word to give us peace and keep us from stumbling. But if our Bible is in a drawer or lying on the table, it may show good intentions of reading it. The only way to make it work is to pick it up and drink deep of its spiritual nourishment.

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for your word that keeps me from stumbling. Real peace is only experienced through you. I pray that my focus remains on you throughout the day. Amen

Faith Tip: If you haven’t read God’s word in awhile, pick it up and enjoy the treasures inside.

I Love the Way You Hold Me

I love the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live. – Psalm 116:1-2

There’s a song I hear on the radio that I like called Hold Me by Jamie Grace. Not only does it have a catchy tune, but the words speak to me regarding how God loves me in such a special way. In fact, here’s the link so you can listen to it yourself.

Each day is so special because of God. Consider and take notice of the ways he shows his love to you. Does your day need “flipping around”? He can do it.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for the way you love me. You are my constant companion through all the good and challenging of life. I pray that I always turn to you. Amen

What's In Your Cart?

When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me.
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. – Psalm 94:18-19

While grocery shopping yesterday, I am always amazed at all the choices we have to put into our cart. The cereal aisle is a great example of this. If someone was to buy a different cereal each week, I bet it would take them over a year to get through them all. How about apples? How many different versions of apples are available on the market? I imagine more than the store has room to stock. It is truly a blessing to be able to put things in our carts to push around and take home with us.

In our spiritual journey, we also have a lot of choices of what we will put into our lives, push around and take home with us. While food focuses on our physical diet, the things in life focus on our spiritual diet. Not all things are good for us.

When we splurge on the unhealthy things of this world, we feel bloated and sick in our soul. The choices we make are crucial to our health. God is there to help us make better choices, or to pick us up out of the muck of our bad choices. Muck is the consequence of bad choices. Allow God to lead you away from the muck and to the green grass of life he has planned for you.

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for being there for me at all times. Even when I fail, you still love me and care for me. I pray that I follow you away from any muck that is positioning itself in my life. Amen

What Do We Really Need?

Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? – Romans 8:32

I heard yesterday of the trek of a young woman who walked across the country with the only provisions being a toothbrush and journal. She started in California and made it to the East Coast. People supplied her with what she needed during her journey. If she didn’t have a place to sleep, she would sleep on the ground. She carried with her a message of peace. This message would carry on in a book that has been written about her adventures. This woman was killed shortly after reaching her destination in a car accident while she was on her way to speak at an engagement.

Her story is a good reminder to us that we discern what our needs really are each day. The list of wants we have seems to be endless and always changing for our tastes and priorities change.

God gave us Jesus. His Son died for us to save us from our sin. That is our major need … to be saved. Because of God’s great love for us, He provided for the need. That being the largest need, why would we doubt Him in any other need we have. He knows our need and will provide.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for caring for me in a special way so that I feel extraordinary. I pray that I am always grateful for all the needs you provide me with as well as keep away the things I feel I need, but you know what is best. Amen

Faith Tip: Consider what God has provided for you already today … and thank Him profusely.

All My Children

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. – Revelation 21:6-7

In my parents house is a hallway that is filled with twelve pictures of all their grandchildren. The hallway sits between the bedroom and the kitchen, so every morning as they make their way to breakfast they start each day remembering their grandchildren. I am sure that it warms their hearts as they look at these pictures. I know that when the grandchildren come and visit and see the prominent place their picture holds in their grandparents’ home, they know they are loved.

Through the victory in Christ, we as believers are all God’s children. If God had a hallway, I am sure that each of our pictures would hold a prominent place in that big hallway. As God looks upon his children and watches over us, his heart is warmed. We must remember how much God loves his children and what a privilege it is to be called the children of God. If you ever feel unloved, just imagine your picture hanging in God’s hallway and know that God loves you.

Prayer: Thank you Father for adopting me as your child. Thank you for you wonderful unconditional love. Help me to always remember how much you love me. Amen.

Faith Tip: Pictures help us remember those we love. Today take a sticky-note or a piece of paper and write on it “I am a child of God. I am loved.” Place that note somewhere where you will see it every day to remind you how much God loves you.

As The World Turns

So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him. Then the word of the LORD came to me. He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the LORD. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel. – Jeremiah 18:3-6

As a potter forms a pot he sits at a wheel and turns the wheel so that the pot can more easily be shaped by his hands. In the beginning the clay is just an unformed lump in the center of the wheel. Nothing happens to it until the potter places his hands on it and begins to form it. Almost magically the lump of clay begins to take shape and is molded into a beautiful pot.

The world is like a pottery wheel and we are like the lumps of clay on the wheel. As the world turns we are shaped and formed from lumps of clay into something beautiful. Sometimes we become marred and blemished and so we are given a second chance to be reshaped into something new. But this story is not about the wheel and it is not about the clay. This story is all about the potter who patiently keeps the wheel turning while continually shaping his creation as seems best to him. Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in the hands of God.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you continually mold me and shape me into something beautiful. Help me to be pliable and flexible in your hands so that I can become the creation that you would like me to be. Amen.

Faith Tip: You are a work in progress. God is not finished molding you until he removes you from the pottery wheel. What is it that God is shaping in you today? Be aware of how God is molding and shaping you in this day.

General Hospital

On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” – Mark 2:17

As a pastor I spend a lot of time in hospitals and health care facilities. As I hear the stories from people who have come through surgery I am continually amazed of what hospitals can do with the advancements in technology and medicine. Although, hospitals can do quite a bit with physical healing, they fall short in the area of spiritual healing.

Sometimes we forget that spiritual healing is just as important as physical healing and that is where the church comes in. We should think of the church as a hospital for spiritual healing. As Christians we are all part of this spiritual hospital helping people who have broken hearts, suffering souls and depressed spirits. We care for them in the emergency room (i.e. Prayer Room). In worship we bring them into the surgery room (i.e. Sanctuary) so the Great Physician, Jesus Christ, can perform open heart surgery. The church is a place for people to come to become spiritually healthy and whole.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for the physical, emotional and spiritual healing that you provide. Help me to have more compassion for those who are in need of spiritual healing. Help me reach out to them and bring them into your healing hands. Amen.

Faith Tip: Do you know someone who is in need of spiritual healing? Try to contact them today or do something to help them see Jesus in their life. Then bring them to the Spiritual Hospital, the church.

Guiding Light

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. – John 1:4-5

For a few days in July, our family camped out at the Holland State Park. One night Julie and the girls decided to make their way to the restrooms before going to bed. Unfortunately, the batteries in the flashlight were dead so they had to stumble through the darkness to get to the restrooms and back. When they returned to the camper, Julie pulled out her iPhone and said, “I believe there is an app for that.” Sure enough, she was able to download an app that allowed her phone to be used as a flashlight. So Jacob and I had a light to guide us and we encountered no problems finding our way through the darkness to the restrooms.

As we walk along the path of life we encounter many problems as we aimlessly stumble through the darkness. The good news is that there is a Savior for that and his name is Jesus. Jesus is the light of the world and his light is able to overcome any darkness that we might encounter. When we have Jesus in our life, we no longer need to stumble through the darkness. We only need to follow Jesus, our guiding light.

Prayer: Thank you Jesus for shining light into my life. Help me to remember that even in my darkest moments you are there ready to guide me by your light. Amen.

Faith Tip: Is there an area in your life where you feel you are stumbling through the darkness? If so turn to the Light of the world and let him guide you through the darkness.

Days of Our Lives

Show me, LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days;
let me know how fleeting my life is. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Everyone is but a breath, even those who seem secure. – Psalm 39:3-5

“Like sands through the hour glass so are the days of our lives”, so goes the tagline of the famous soap opera. This tagline sums up the Psalmist feelings as he discovers how fleeting his life really is. The Psalmist asks the Lord to reveal to him the number of his days, here on earth, so that he can more appreciate the days he has been given.

Unlike the Psalmist, we often take our days for granted believing that we have many more to spare. We don’t like to think about the end of our days and so we tend to think that we will live for many, many years. When a person actually begins to see the end of life they tend to make better use of the days they have been given. We need to live life like our days are numbered and never take a day for granted. I saw a bumper sticker that said, “Today is a gift that is why it’s called the Present.”

Prayer: Thank you Lord for this day. Help me to receive the gift of this day and make the most of this day that you have given me. Forgive me when I take my days for granted and let them slip away. Amen.

Patterns to Follow

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. – Romans 12:2

I stepped on the scale this morning and saw a number that I hadn’t seen for a long time. The world says, “Yea, you now can fit into those jeans and breathe at the same time!” While I feel good about this achievement, and celebrate with Jesus, I know that the goal I strive for is not a number transformed by the scale, but a transformation of the mind in serving God. The goal for me is to be in good physical shape so that I can do ministry effectively. It is also a transformation of my spirit as I crave God more and more.

God is in the business of transforming his people. Our part is the choices we make in the transformation process. Do we allow the world to dictate our transformation by listening to what they believe is good for us, or do we listen and choose what God says is good for us? A choice for the world brings chains that imprison us. Don’t be fooled by the marketing that this is what success looks like. Don’t buy into the lie that you will feel so good. Choosing God’s plan of transformation will bring freedom along with peace, joy, and love.

Prayer: Jesus, you are the one who makes all things possible. I thank you for the transformation you have done in my life. I pray that I always will choose you and not be fooled by the world. Amen

Logical Prayer

As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. – Exodus 17:11-12

Sometimes prayer just doesn’t make sense, does it? Perhaps most the time it doesn’t. When we are told that it’s the most powerful thing we can do, we really wonder if that is true. Sometimes we don’t experience clear answers to our prayers and think we may have wasted time talking to God about it. We especially feel this way when we are praying for bigger things like the economy and other nations. We can’t imagine how our little prayer will help in any way.

Praying is connecting to kingdom power. Our prayers are making a huge difference in the kingdom. Throughout Scripture, it is evident that prayer does amazing things. How about when Elijah prayed for God to accept his sacrifice when the worshipers of Baal couldn’t get a response from their god (1 Kings 18)? Moses prayed for the people repeatedly that God wouldn’t destroy them because of their sin against him (Numbers 11). People were praying for Peter in Acts 12, and an angel came and released him from prison. No one was more shocked that something happened than those who were praying.

I recently came across a sign that read “Much Prayer, Much Power, Little Prayer, Little Power, No Prayer, No Power.” It’s kind of like that saying, “If you don’t expect much, you won’t get much.” We base our actions on facts. The fact is that prayer is powerful. Why else would Satan fight it so much? He knows the power.

Pray knowing that things are happening. Not one prayer is wasted. Don’t wait until you reach heaven and then wish you would have prayed more during your life.

Prayer: Lord, you have shown us through the Bible that prayer makes a difference. I pray that I can live out that truth and stand steadfast on your promises. Amen

Faith Tip: Today make prayer an absolute in all you do. See the difference it will make in your life.

Need Refreshing Today?

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. – Proverbs 11:25

How do you get refreshed? Is refreshment important? I believe God thinks it is as there are many examples of his people being refreshed through the Scriptures. Not only does God do the refreshing himself as we see with the prophet Elijah, but he also refreshes through people such as Onesiphorus who refreshed Paul. People can be refreshed physically, spiritually and emotionally.

That’s the ministry I like to do … refresh people. I lead a ladies retreat to do this called Spiritual Spa Day. I truly look forward to doing this event again and again as I see God work in the lives of women. The next spa day is less than two weeks away, and then I may be doing another one in September and another in February. Women need to be refreshed by God’s Spirit to see how valuable they truly are to him. Do you need refreshment?

Prayer: Lord, I thank you for the opportunities to minister. I pray that you will be seen at the center of it all for you are the great refresher. Amen

Faith Tip: Look to God for your refreshment today. His living water is always flowing … drink deep.

Your Value

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Luke 12:6-7

I remember being in a team building exercise when I worked at a bank where the team you were on needed to decide who lived and who died based on a “story problem” of everyone getting a dreaded disease and only one could have the serum to cure it. Everyone on the team was given a character sketch of their age, abilities, education, career and so on. This information was meant to help us make our choice. One was given more value than the others.

That’s not how Jesus sees us. Jesus sees us with great love and value. Who we are, what we have or can do has no bearing on our value to God. Jesus would have gone to the cross for just one of us … just for you. You are the one chosen to receive the cure for sin. God has a purpose for you. You were created just for it.

Prayer: God, I thank you for the cure of sin you have given me. I pray that I can live out the purpose you have for me and not be swayed by the callings of the world. Amen

Faith Tip: Knowing the value that you have to God, how can that make you look at others differently?

New Adventures

The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8

She had never driven a long way from home before. She was nervous. Determination to reach her destination gave her the fortitude needed to embark on the journey. Although the weather switched from sunny to rainy, the map was confusing at times, and the stays at hotels along the way were welcome when exhaustion overcame her, she made it. God had given her all she needed to answer his call for her to go.

It doesn’t matter if your name is Moses, Joshua, Peter or Paul, doing something that is out of our box is scary. Discouragement can be felt if the road we travel on is not going as we expect. Keeping the focus of God is imperative to making the journey. Believe his promise that he will never leave you nor forsake you. He goes before you, so there is no reason to be afraid. Stand strong and encouraged.

Prayer: Jesus, I thank you for the new adventures you call me to do in your name. My knees stop shaking when I focus on you and your call and trusting it. I pray that I listen carefully to your voice and follow obediently. Amen

Homecoming

But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate. – Luke 15:22-24

My family has been traveling this week to Iowa and South Dakota, so I have been alone all week. It has been very quiet around the house. This is good in some ways, but in most ways it is too quiet. I miss having Julie and the kids around to talk to, to share meals with and to enjoy one another’s company. That is why I am very much looking forward to their homecoming this evening.

I have somewhat of a sense of what the father of the prodigal son felt when his lost son came home. I will probably not welcome them at the door with rings for their fingers and sandals for their feet and a nicely roasted fattened calf, but I will be very happy to see them! This must be how God feels as he waits for us to come home to him. Homecomings are wonderful and when we all get to heaven it will be a wonderful day of rejoicing!

Prayer: Thank you Lord for waiting for me to come home. I can’t wait to be home with you in heaven. I look forward to that wonderful day. Amen!

Faith Tip: Today set you mind on heaven and remind yourself that this is not your home, your true home is in heaven with Jesus. Also, please pray for safe travels for my family.

"Where's God?"

My heart says of you, “Seek his face!” Your face, LORD, I will seek. – Psalm 27:8

When my children where younger we enjoyed looking at the “Where’s Waldo?” books. If you are not familiar with “Where’s Waldo?”, they are picture books where each picture is filled with many people doing many different things. The object is to find Waldo amongst all the people and details. Waldo wears a red and white striped shirt, blue jeans, a red and white hat, and walks with a cane. By himself Waldo is very easily noticeable, but when he is surrounded by all the other details in the picture he is difficult to find.

Sometimes life can get like a “Where’s Waldo?” picture. The busyness and small details in life can be so overwhelming that it becomes difficult to find God in the details. God is not difficult to find, in fact he is right by your side, but if we allow life to overwhelm us we sometimes lose sight of his face. As the Psalmist says we need to seek God’s face each and every day. Sometimes that can be a difficult thing to do with all that is going on, but we must continually strive to “Seek his face!”

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you are always right there with me. Forgive me when the details of life keep me from seeking your face. Help me to find you in every day. Amen.

Faith Tip: Today look for God even in the small details of your life.

The Roadblock of Sin

Do not put out the Spirit’s fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. – 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22

Yesterday, I received a new phone. This new phone is supposed to be faster, more powerful and be able to do more things than my old phone. However, in order to use this new phone I have to transfer my information from my old phone to my new phone. Unfortunately, the “app for that” is not working on my old phone. This problem is creating a roadblock for me to tap into the power of my new phone and so the new phone remains in the box until I can get the problem solved.

Sin is like that in our life. God has given us his Holy Spirit that provides power, strength, wisdom and encouragement. But sin in our life can be a roadblock that puts out the Spirit’s fire. As long as that sin remains a part of our life we will never know the full power of God’s Spirit. Is there a sin in your life that you have been struggling with for sometime? If so remove that sin from your life and experience the full power and blessing of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer: Thank you Lord for giving me your Spirit. Forgive me of the sin in my life that keeps me from tapping into the Spirit’s power. Help me to remove this sin from my life. Amen.

Faith Tip: We all have “general sin” in our life, but we also have “individual sins” that are those sins that we struggle with daily and are unique in our life experience. Think of an individual sin in your life; ask God for forgiveness and for the strength to remove that sin from your life.

Jesus is the Rock

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. – Psalm 18:2

My daughters have been attending a Creative Praise Day Camp this summer where they learn about music and praising God. One of the songs they have learned goes like this, “Jesus is the Rock and he rolls my blues away, bop shoe bop, shoe bop, whoo!” It is a rocky blues song with a catchy tune that is easy and fun to sing. So the girls come home from camp singing this throughout the day.

Because this song is so catchy it easily gets stuck in my head and I find myself humming along as I go about my daily tasks. This morning I woke up with it stuck in my head. Now I must admit that usually it annoys me when I get a song stuck in my head and it won’t go away. But I don’t mind this song because it reminds me throughout the day that Jesus is my rock in whom I can take refuge and no matter what I face throughout this day, he will always be there to help me!

Prayer: Thank you Jesus for being my rock, my fortress, my deliverer. Thank you that you provide me a firm foundation on which to stand. May my feet never move from this solid rock. Amen.

She Speaks, She Writes, She Teaches/Leads

I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong—that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. – Romans 1:11

I was constantly amazed by the number of women at the She Speaks conference knowing that each one of them carried a message from God to minister to others. So the 650 women shared their hearts and were blessed. One may think that with so many speakers, writers and teachers that the message is overdone, but not so. God in his wisdom created a different message for each person.

How about you? What is God’s message in you that needs to be shared for his glory? Do not worry that the story is either too plain or too colorful. It is perfect because it is God’s story. Can you imagine if everyone in the church shared their God story, how encouraged we all would be by the mercy and grace shown through his children?

Prayer: Lord, my God story is unique from other’s stories and that is how it should be. I pray that I can share my story to encourage the body of believers to be drawn closer to you. It is all about you. Amen

Faith Tip: Think about the great things God has done in your life. What valleys did you walk together that showed you his great love? Please consider sharing your story with others. You are blessed to be a blessing.

Winning

I love to play Scrabble. I have reconnected with a high school friend through Facebook who lives in Pennsylvania and happens to be a Scrabble master. Playing against him has sharpened my Scrabble skills to where I can actually be close to beating him. I press on…

Pressing on means to persevere and work towards a goal. Each of our calls differs, but they all lead us heavenward. In Jesus, we have everything we need to press on and reach the goal set before us. The prize is within our grasp. Don’t give up, but press on.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for the call you have put on my life. I pray that your Spirit will refresh me on those days I don’t feel like pressing on. It’s all for you, Jesus. Amen

Faith Tip: Feeling discouraged in reaching your goal? Look to Jesus for the strength to go on and finish the race victoriously.

A Great Cloud of God's Gals

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” - Hebrews 12:1

This past week, I was part of “a great cloud of witnesses” at the She Speaks conference in Concord, North Carolina. The 650 women that were there to run the race that God has marked for us grew together as we worshiped, listened to instruction, were evaluated, visited the prayer room, talked with editors and agents, encouraged one another, and served one another. In this kind of business where sin can easily trip us up, the prayers that were said for and by so many of the women and staff set the tone for the glorious presence of God during the weekend.

It doesn’t take a special conference for this to be put in place in our lives. We are today surrounded by a many witnesses as we journey through life. Sin can easily entangle us, but if we make it a priority to pray for one another, the race we run for God is smoother as we freely jump the hurdles on the track.

Prayer: I thank you, Lord, for the many women who prayed for me during the weekend from She Speaks and also the people who prayed for me from my home church. I pray that we can continue in a spirit of prayer to life one another up throughout our race in life. Amen
